Shore Excursion: Punta Tombo Penguin Colony

The route through Punta Tombo is simple and of low difficulty. It is a path along which you go to the end and come back, allowing each passenger to travel as far as they wish. You will start to see penguins as soon as you enter the trail.

The reserve has a short 650-meter path of wooden walkways for passengers with wheelchairs or passengers with some difficulty walking. It is important to note that the accompaniment of another person is needed throughout the entire journey. Please notify in advance to take into account the type of vehicle to be used.

We recommend wearing comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Always bring a coat since, being on the coast, the sea breeze often rises and cools down. It is also important to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a reusable water bottle.

In the case of Punta Tombo we can enjoy an exceptional approach to the Magellanic penguins throughout their reproductive stage: courtship, mating, incubation of eggs, chicks, feather changes. Other species of interest are also seen such as maras, guanacos, rheas, foxes, furry birds and a number of birds such as seagulls, calandrias, harriers, jotes, among others.
All tours in our area are in protected natural areas, this means that behavior is natural and unpredictable.

The Punta Tombo trail crosses the reserve so you will have penguins around you constantly. It is extremely important to understand that these animals visit us naturally for the reproduction of the species, which is why they are the protagonists of the reserve. Visitors are spectators of this moment and must respect nature at all times. This implies maintaining a safe distance so as not to modify their behavior and to avoid accidents such as possible pecks.

We will be waiting for you with a sign with your name at the foot of the boat, about 100 meters away. The tolerance time for departure is 40 minutes from the beginning of passenger descent.
Long tours return to the dock approximately 1 hour before the ship’s departure. For the peace of mind of passengers, we work together with other city agencies so in case of any inconvenience, we have support vehicles.
